Welcome!

Posted by Levi at 8:03pm on December 24, 2011

Welcome to my new website. This will be my new home on the web, but I will still post on sites that I usually post on, such as Wunderground. You are currently reading the section of the home page which will host my latest blog entries, which will usually contain both text and an embedded video. The site itself is not WordPress, but this blog structure is. Thus, as you can see, comments are possible, and encouraged. Please leave suggestions and feedback, positive or critical, on this blog entry, to help me improve this website. We are far from the 2012 hurricane season, but now is a good time to start fine-tuning the site before the season overwhelms us. Feel free to look around before posting your thoughts. A couple of the pages on the navbar contain dynamically-updating content that you will not find anywhere else on the web, though some of it will be empty until we actually have a storm in the Atlantic. Something for you to look forward to 🙂

This site was designed 100% by hand, except for some of the embedded wordpress blog structure, and this is my very first time learning and using HTML/CSS. Thus, there are sure to be some bugs and compatibility issues with some browsers. I have done my best, but I can’t be bothered to deal with the quirks in old Internet Explorer versions. If you are using IE and don’t have IE9 or higher, some elements of this site won’t display properly, and even in IE9, one or two aesthetic effects are not supported. This site utilizes HTML5 and CSS3, and some of those features are not supported by older browsers. Firefox 4+, Opera 10+, and all versions of Safari and Chrome should not have any problems. If you do encounter an issue that isn’t because of an old Internet Explorer version, please let me know either in the comments section of this entry or via email at levicowan@tropicaltidbits.com

Regarding comments, WordPress requires an alias and an email address to be given for unregistered users to leave a comment. The email addresses go into a database that is tied only to this site. To make it easier to post comments, you can register and login, thereby giving yourself a permanent alias. After registering, you can change your password by visiting your profile (accessible by clicking on “settings” at the top right of the home page) and near the bottom is a new password field.

Note about the satellite page: What I hope will be a favorite among bloggers, the Satellite GIF Loops page, serves up GIF loops that are generated on my shared server by a script that demands more CPU time than I would care to admit. I get constantly throttled for it by my host provider, and by myself I haven’t experienced performance issues, but that might change immediately once more traffic comes in now that the site is going live. If this becomes an issue, the satellite page may have to be removed pretty quickly. I hope that won’t happen, but if the site seems annoyingly slow, please let me know.

I have been working on and off on this site for many months now. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it. This is only a small home-base for now, but it can be expanded at will, for obviously I control it. I have no idea how much it will grow, but we shall see what happens.

Thanks Levi. One quick question – is there a way to change the password that was emailed to me?

    • Levi says:

Good question. Go to your profile (accessible by clicking on your name above the comment box) and near the bottom is a change password field.

      • StAugustineFL says:

Thank you Levi, it worked. 🙂 I think it’d be beneficial to have the “log in” link at the top of the page versus the bottom.

Thanks for all you do. Looking forward to your insight. Happy New Year!

See that’s what I need you guys for 🙂 My brother can only see so much as a reviewer lol. Register and Login links have been added to the top right of the home page.

Thanks Levi. Got it in my favorites. Looking forward to another active Atlantic hurricane surfing season. Got a new roof out of Irene. Otherwise…regards, and Happy New Year to you and yours.

Looks great Levi. Love the large maps, satellite, etc.

Happy New Year Your site is sweet! It brings a lot of your sources together so we can understand what you are saying and keep up with it!

  • EagleHarborZig says:

I see that the comments reference UTC Time. Is there a way to change it to local time?

    • Levi says:

Unfortunately, WordPress does not currently support this option. It has to be the same timezone for all users. One thing I could do is change it to EST, which is sure to be the most popular timezone, but I’m still debating that. Weather nuts all have to convert from UTC to local on a day to day basis anyway.

      • EagleHarborZig says:

Maybe you could add something right before the comments like UTC-EST+5. It also seems cumbersome to have to enter Name and Email address when you comment.

        • Levi says:

You don’t have to enter your name and email after you have registered and logged in, as I know you have. You can just comment straight away.

Good site Levi and Happy New Year. I live in NE Florida and we’re about to get our first Arctic blast. Why is the jet amplifying to such an extreme so suddenly when the pattern has been zonal and progressive so far this winter?

    • Levi says:

It’s hard to know for sure, but the MJO may have something to do with it, since it is moving eastward across the Pacific for the first time since the winter began, and that could be responsible for the amplification upstream in the Gulf of Alaska, which in turn amplifies the rest of the North American pattern.

  • vivianne says:

Levi, great to see you with your own site. Best of luck for all you do in 2012.

  • Bassis says:

Great Site. Will be here all the time. Still waiting for another winter update video

  • shoreacres says:

Site looks great, Levi. The autocomplete for name & email worked fine for me as a wordpress user, and I’ve got you bookmarked.

  • Ken says:

Looks fine to me and anything that references the North East Pacific is useful to me. My theory is that you and I are the first to see weather packages that later influence the more populated areas.
I already use WordPress to read and comment on Linda’s blog there. So we will see if I am signed in.
Oh Yeah: Have a Fine New Year!

  • TzuMom says:

Congrats on constructing a great site. Can’t wait for tropical season to start to see the number of users rise like a cumulonimbus cloud! : ) This site will be my primary “go to” site for tropical weather! As always, thanks, Levi, for all you do!

This is great thank you Levi!

  • weatherwarrior says:

    very nice levi!

  • Ginny says:

Levi, your predictions of a warmer winter helped me prepare for our vacation at the beach in NC. Last year they had 10″ of snow where we were and others’ predictions that this winter would be the same were daunting. I banked on yours and you were right!

  • WxJAK says:

Great looking site; I’ve been looking forward to it since you hinted at its development a while back!

I value your insights and look forward to you future content.

  • fetoau says:

If the formation or lack thereof of hurricanes doesn’t provide you with enough of an intellectual challenge, you may want to attempt to understand why some nor’easters bomb and others don’t even though conditions appear the same.

I have followed your postings for several years and you are an impressive young man. Keep up the good work.
