what does it mean when a hurricane loses “tropical characteristics”? Is it when the storm no longer feeds of the ocean heat content?

    • Owen says:

It means that it still can have the winds of a tropical storm/hurricane but has lost the looks of what it is supposed to look like which is when a tropical storm/hurricane moves over water significantly colder waters than 26.5 C(79.7 F). This will deprive the storm of such tropical characteristics as a warm core with thunderstorms near the center, so that it becomes a remnant low-pressure area.

THANK YOU!! I really LOVE the reports you give! You are the go-to Person for all tropic weather reporting. I realize that these are your views and your views alone, but it is wonderful to have no-nonsense straightforward facts and logical forward possibilities. THANK YOU!! As a commercial pilot I am always looking at the reports and having your insight on these topics is just wonderful!!!

Priceless, Levi. Thank you for explaining the various scenarios, showing us the impacts various inputs can have on development, and explaining the limitations of long range forecasting on dynamic systems.
Although your reports are unofficial, they are intelligent and informative for people who may be in harms way to make safety preparations and “better safe than sorry” evacuation decisions.
